This excursion will take place in one of the wildest and unspoiled area of Mount Etna, where vegetation and volcanic land blend together in perfect harmony.
Our tour will start at the beginning of the trail of Monte Fontane, from where, at the top (1.278 m), we will be able to admire the astonishing view of the Valle del Bove. We will continue towards Monti Sartorius, old craters that originated during the volcanic eruption of 1865. They got named after Wolfgang Sartorius von Waltershausen, a scientist lived in the XIX century who cataloged for the first time the eruption of Etna. Next we will reach Piano Provenzana (1.820 m) where the big and spectacular eruption of 2002 destroyed the whole area. From here we will walk to Rifugio Timparossa and take a lunch break. We will conclude our tour at Grotta della Neve, a lava tunnel used in the past as a “neviera” (a place to preserve the snow).
